Media and Community Outreach

Part of the challenge for your organization is making sure your mission to promote and strengthen the institution of healthy marriage is reaching the African American community. The AAHMI Quick Reference Guide to Local Media and Community Outreach (pdf, 306KB) is a tool to help you become more knowledgeable about media engagement and community outreach.

We have also provided Outreach and Media Kit Samples for you to customize and tailor to your efforts.

Education and Community

One of our main goals for this African American Healthy Marriage Initiative Forum has been to provide a venue to the African American Community to be educated and informed on what it takes to have a healthy marriage. We have compiled, for your convenience, some articles and studies on such topics as “Premarital and Marriage Education,” “Marriage Education for Couples Becoming Parents” and “Closing the Marriage Gap.” View the section details (pdf, 3.16MB) to see these topics as well as others addressed.

Enhancing Partnerships

If you are a member of a faith-based, civic, or community organization and feel that your community is in need of a Community Healthy Marriage Initiative (CHMI), we encouraged you to view the section details. We have collected information from several sources regarding starting your own initiative. We have outlined a six-step plan for starting a CHMI and included other pertinent information to get you started and on the right track. In addition, the AAHMI conference presentation by Diann Dawson is included in this section. View the section details (pdf, 2.5MB).

Funding and Capacity Building Opportunities

This section includes potential technical resources that may be available to groups that are interested in beginning or strengthening an existing African American Healthy Marriage Initiative. We have also included several resources to assist you in finding and applying for federal grants to fund your cause.

Some key resources include the Community Service Block Grant details, Government Grants Web site, How to Apply for Funds, ACF Grant Opportunities, Compassion Capital Fund Program, Types of Federal Domestic Assistance, and the SAMHSA Grant Writing Manual. Links go to other pages on the Internet and forms can be filled in directly, all intended to provide information to you fast and easy. View the resource information (pdf, 9.4MB).

CHMI Resource Guide

The Lewin Group is pleased to share materials on marriage topics developed for the Community Healthy Marriage Initiatives. They have assembled a resource guide of speakers, organized by the marriage topics that they are most affluent in. We hope that this will be a beneficial tool in choosing forum speakers. View the resource guide (pdf, 338KB).
